The Lies We Believe (Genesis 3)

Passage:  Genesis 3:1-24

Main Point:  Guard against deception by acting on the truth of God’s Word.

I. A war of deception is being waged against the truth. (1-7)
            A. Satan targets my weak points in faith and doctrine.
            B. Beware of the world’s decision-making grid. (v6) (1 John 2:16)
                        1.  It appeals to my appetite.
                        2.  It is attractive, looks good.
                        3.  It promises self-improvement.
            C. Guilt and shame were the start of the death God promised.

II. God does not ignore sin. (8-13)
            A. God sees me and waits for me to answer his call.
            B. Stop justifying myself and just confess, “I sinned”.

III. Sin results in punishment AND provision. (14-19)
            A. God promised a son who would destroy the deceiving serpent.
            B. The woman’s punishment is painful childbirth and marital strife.
            C. The man’s punishment is painful toil followed by death.

IV. We believe in a saving God. (20-24)
            A. God’s promises enable me to look forward to the future.
            B. Our good God provides a covering for all sin and shame.
            C. Confess self-pity and blame and let Jesus fill you with hope.
