Speaking in Tongues (1 Corinthians 14:1-25)

Passage:  1 Corinthians 14:1-25

Main Point:  The mature believer seeks to edify the whole church.

I. Tongues are a spiritual gift of another language.   (1)
            A. Every Biblical use refers to language or the tongue.
            B. The one speaking in tongues has self-control.
            C. What is said can be interpreted for others.

II. Prophesy is superior to tongues for the sake of others.
            A. Tongues speak to God not men.  (2)
            B. Tongues edify the self not the church.  (3-5)
                        1.  The hearer must understand to benefit.  (6)
                        2.  Instruments must be used correctly to benefit.  (7-9)
                        3.  A strange language is a barrier.  (10-11)
                        4.  The zeal should be directed to edify others.  (12)
            C. Tongues must be interpreted to edify others.  (13-19)

III. Tongues are a sign of judgment to the lost.  (13-25)
            A. Prophesy is a sign to believers.
            B. Tongues are a sign to unbelievers.
