Passage:  1^st John 2:18-27

Main Point:  My place in Christ is based on His promise to me, His work for me and His Spirit in me.

I. John compares the Gnostics to the antichrist. (18-19)
            A. Beware of systems, people and teachers who oppose Christ.
            B. God uses division to protect and refine the church.

II. John affirms that every believer has the Holy Spirit (20-23)
            A. Like Jesus, Believers are anointed, or indwelled by the Spirit.
            B. The Spirit’s ministry is made visible through the church.
            C. I can discern truth and error because of the Spirit.

III. John commands us to hold-fast to the truth—Christ. (24-27)
            A. Beware of subtle substitutions for the truth.
            B. Satan’s lies are wrapped in something tantalizing.
            C. Faith encourages faith and doubt encourages doubt.
