Passage:  1 John 4:20 – 5:21

Main Point:  God gives us His love so we can love Him and one another.

I. Passion for Christ is expressed in compassion for people. (4:20-5:3a)
            A. Everyone must believe in Jesus for salvation.
            B. Love for one another must be unconditional.
            C. Obedience is evidence that I am a child of God.

II. The Ten Commandments.  (Exodus 20:3-17)
            1. You shall have no other gods before Me.
            2. You shall not make for yourself an idol.
            3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
            4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
            5. Honor your father and your mother.
            6. You shall not murder.
            7. You shall not commit adultery.
            8. You shall not steal.
            9. You shall not bear false witness.
            10. You shall not covet.

III. Faith is the secret to victorious obedience. (3b-15)
            A. Faith and love are not difficult starting points.
            B. Jesus must be the object of my faith.
            C. God’s Word must inform my faith.
            D. God’s Spirit will confirm my faith.
            E. God’s wants to help me obey, so I should ask for help.
            F. Obeying God results in prayerful concern for others.

IV. Walk forward in faith and don’t yield to sin and doubt. (18-21)
            A. In spite of my sinful flesh, I have new, eternal life in Christ.
            B. If I have Christ, I have all I need.
            C. Idols can be anything that hinders my passion for Christ.
