Honest Worship (Psalm 51)

Passage:  Psalm 51

Main Point:  Honest worship starts with a broken heart and ends with restoration.

I. Our God is the good God of grace. (1-2)
            A. One after God’s own heart ended up murderous.  (cf. 2 Samuel 11-12)
            B. David relies on God’s character. (cf. Exodus 34:6-7)

II. My heart is sinfully sick. (3-6)
           
A. I must own my sin.
            B. All sin is against an absolute holy God.
            C. There is no moment of my existence when I am not a sinner.
            D. The Lord does in us what we cannot do in ourselves.

III. Boldly seek the grace God freely gives.(7-12)
            A. God can remove my all my sin.
            B. The breaker is also the healer.
            C. God can create a “new me” within me.
            D. God replaces paralyzing fear with mobilizing hope.

IV. God heals from the inside-out. (13-19)
            A. Those who turn to God call others to turn.
            B. God wants heart-work, not my hard work
            C. A hard heart cannot experience the healing of grace.
            D. Sin destroys, but God’s grace restores.
