Why Do We Celebrate Communion? (1 Corinthians 11:17-30)

June 1, 2025
Passage:  1 Corinthians 11:17-30
Speaker:  Pastor Rodney DeJager
Main Idea:  We celebrate Communion to proclaim Christ.

I. There are three main perspectives on Communion.
            A. In the Roman Catholic view, the bread and the cup become
the body and blood of Christ.
                 (cf. John 6:53-58, 63; Hebrews 10:12-14)
            B. In Martin Luther and John Calvin’s view, the bread and the
cup are infused with the body and blood of Christ.
            C. In the memorial view, the bread and cup represent
the body and blood of Christ.

II. When we celebrate Communion, we proclaim Christ in two ways.

A. When we celebrate Communion, we proclaim what Christ
has done through His sacrifice on the cross.
            B. When we celebrate Communion, we proclaim what Christ
will do when He brings His people home.

III. We must prepare our hearts for Communion.
            A. We must appreciate the sacrifice that Jesus has made and
                   not take it for granted.
            B. We must anticipate Jesus’ return and not place our hope
in the things of this world.
