Church Elders (Part 2) (1 Timothy 3:1-7)

Passage:  1 Timothy 3:1-7

Main Point:  Elders are good men mature enough to guard the church.

I. Jesus is the head of the church.
            A. Jesus is the One who builds the church.
            B. Elders are those who lead the church.

II. Elders are to be those becoming more like Jesus.
            A. They are to be self-controlled.
            B. They are to be sensible.
            C. They are to be respectable.
            D. They are to be hospitable.
            E. They are to be able to teach.

III. Elders are to practice self-control.
            A. They are to be free of vices.
                        1.  Not addicted to wine.
                        2.  Not a bully, but gentle.
                        3.  Not quarrelsome.
                        4.  Not greedy.
            B. They are to set an example.
                        1.  They must manage their children.
                        2.  They must not be a new convert.
                        3.  They must have a good reputation.
