Walk In The Light (1st John 1:5-10)

Passage:  1st John 1:5-10

Main Point:  Fellowship is restored when sin is confessed and we draw near to God at the foot of the cross.

I. God has always been the revealer.  (v. 5)
            A. He reveals Himself and salvation.
            B. He reveals my sin and His holiness.
                        (John 1:4-5; 3:19-21; 8:12; 12:46; Revelation 21:23)
            C. John’s message was to be declared then and now.

II. God reveals Christ’s life in the believer’s life.  (v. 6-7)
            A. To walk in the light is to be responsive to God.  (Galatians 2:20)
            B. Relationship with God results in ongoing cleansing of sin.

III. It is good to be clean before God.  (v. 8-10)
            A. 1st John 1:9 is written to Christians.
            B. Confession is a continual practice Christians are called to do.
                        1.  Acknowledge each failure that is revealed.
                        2.  Publicly confess Christ.  (Matthew 10:32)
                        3.  Internally turning away from sin.  (Matthew 3:6; Mark 1:5; Acts 19:18)
            C. Forgiveness is absolutely assured.
            D. Joy is made complete when hidden sin is confessed.  (cf. 1:4)
