Heart-Work (Nehemiah 5:1-19)

Passage:  Nehemiah 5:1-19

Main Point:  Selfishness ends with hearts motivated by God’s redeeming love.

I. While I work for God, He works on my heart. (1-5)
            A. The enemy’s favorite weapon is selfishness.
            B. Without humility and mercy, there is no unity.
            C. God tells us how we should act in all circumstances.  (Exodus 22:25-27; Jeremiah 7:5-7)

II. I need to have the Shepherd’s heart. (6-13)
            A. Do what is right, not what feels or seems good.  (Psalm 4:4; 37:8-9)
            B. Appeal for heart-felt repentance.
            C. Reconciliation is our foundation to worshiping God.

III. Nehemiah is an example for future leaders to follow. (14-19)
            A. Nehemiah’s ultimate authority was God, not man.
            B. His ultimate aim was the mission, not personal gain.
            C. His ultimate concern was the cost to others, not himself.
            D. He served only to please the Lord.
