From Slaves to Sons (Galatians 4:1-11)

Main Point:  My identity as God’s son is based on a relationship with God who will never fail.

I. The Christian life is not the slavish life of rule following. (v.1-3)
         A. Men and women are “Sons of God” by faith, not works. (ch.3)
         B. Paul compares life under the law to the legal rights of a child.
         C. Legalism is a step toward spiritual immaturity.

II. God wants sons and daughters, not slaves. (v.4-7)
         A. God sent the Son to purchase your adoption (redemption).
         B. It is clear: sonship is better.
                  1.  We share our father’s nature.  (2 Peter 1:4)
                  2.  We have a dad, not a master. (v.6)  (Romans 8:15-16)
                  3.  We obey in loving response, not out of fear.  (Galatians 5:22)
                  4.  You have immediate access to the riches of God. (v.7)  (Ephesians 1:7)
                  5.  We have an eternal inheritance. (v.7)  (Romans 8:23; 1 Peter 1:4)

III. A personal relationship with Jesus results in true freedom.
            A. Don’t rest too long on your sense of accomplishment.
            B. Praise God for the freedom exercised by other believers.
