Ten Rules for Giving Criticism (Matthew 7:1-6)

Main Point:  Always speak the truth in love.

I. Do not judge.    (Matthew 7:1-5)
            A. Judging is pronouncing guilt or innocence according to your own standard.
            B. Jesus commands us not to judge one another.
                        1.  The motive—  (because we care)
                        2.  The words—  (do not use harsh words)
                        3.  The attitude—  (do not be sarcastic)
                        4.  The source—  (motivated by love, not jealousy)
                        5.  The understanding—  (understand the situation so as not to judge or provide incorrect counsel)

II. Ten basic rules for using criticism for good.
            1. Pray for the Lord’s control.
            2. Go directly to the person involved.  (Matthew 18:15)
            3. Go privately.
            4. Lead with questions.
            5. Always double-check your motive.
            6. Be honest(Stay with facts)
            7. Speak in love.  (Philippians 2:1-4)
            8. Be objective and specific.
            9. Earn the right to be heard.
            10. Suggest alternatives.

III. Anticipate the response. (Matthew 7:6)
            A. Use criticism sparingly and not at all on those who would pay no attention.
            B. Recognize that certain tensions will always exist.
            C. Criticize only for the important things.
